DEXA (bone density scanning)
Almost 7 million men and women nationwide are at risk of fracture due to reduced bone mineral density. Osteoporosis affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men. If detected early, osteoporosis can be treated.
Nuffield Health has invested significantly in technology and staff expertise to provide DEXA scanning services across the country. DEXA stands for Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry - it is a fast, accurate and painless test to measure bone density. Images of the spine or hips are taken as the patient relaxes on a couch. The whole examination takes approximately 20 minutes.
If you feel you may be at risk, you can refer yourself to us for a scan directly without going through your GP.
People may be at risk of reduced bone mineral density if they:
- Have a family history of osteoporosis
- Have lost more than 3cm in height
- Smoke or drink to excess
- Have experienced early menopause (under 45 years old)
- Have a body mass index of less than 19
Results from our DEXA scans are usually ready within a week and include a comprehensive report verified by a Specialist (for example, a Consultant Radiologist).
A DEXA scan can help men and women identify if they have osteoporosis or are at risk of developing it. If caught early enough treatment and dietary changes can improve bone health and reduce the possibility of future fractures.
